Hi

I would like to estimate the length and width of food grains. There is
an article about exactly this topic (Igathinathane et al., 2009). But I
do not find a tutorial how to do this mesasurement.

Do you know instructions, or rather plugins, for this task?

thx
Christof

for the archive...

"Analyze" > "Particle Analyzer" fit ellipse seems to be a good option to
estimate the length and width. major/minor axis of the ellipse
should be approximately equal to length/width of the food grains.

Furthermore this option should have the advantage to be not so sensitive
to noise, shadow or ragged borders of the food grains.

- select straight "Analyze" > "Set Scale"
(set Known Distance and Unit of length)
- select dirt and "Edit" > "Clear"
- "Image" > "Type" > 8-Bit
- "Process" > "Binary" > "Make Binary"
- "Analyse" > "Set Measurements" > Fit ellipse
- "Analyse" > "Anaylse Particles"
- Show > Outlines, Display results, Clear results,
Summarize, Add to Manager, Record Stat ...

- OK, "Major"/"Minor" in Results = length/wide of fitted ellipse.
